Brickmont Assisted Living - Planning for the Modern Retirement Age

The modern retirement age is changing and gradually increasing as time goes on. While the average retirement age used to be 65 years old, it has progressively increased to 67 years old for those born after 1959. As the modern retirement age changes, you may be wondering what your retirement age is, or you may need a little help planning what your retirement will look like.

Brickmont Assisted Living, with senior living communities throughout Atlanta, Georgia, has created this guide to help you and your family understand how retirement is changing, what it looks like today, and how you can plan for it.

Financial Planning

As you approach your ideal retirement age, the first item you should get in order is your finances. Everyone is a bit different when it comes to this phase, but the financial aspect is the first piece of the puzzle. It’s worthwhile to note that your budget list will shrink when moving to a retirement community. You will still need to pay for your home in the community, but you will no longer have to worry about costs associated with home maintenance.

Brickmont Assisted Living includes the following and much more in our monthly base package:

  • Scheduled Transportation
  • Utilities (cable and telephone not included)
  • On-Site nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Full-service Dining
  • Weekly Housekeeping and Personal Laundry Service

Moving into a retirement community may help clean your budget up quite a bit by removing certain items of your monthly costs. The Social Security Agency also provides a general estimation of what your benefits may look like when you choose to retire.

Retirement Community Options

The age you retire isn’t the only thing changing; retirement communities have been shifting and changing the game, too. After you have your budget, you can decide where you would like to live or move, and what you may require as you continue to age. Retirement and senior living communities are just about everywhere, but not every community will be perfect for you. That’s why you need to narrow down your choices.

You’ve worked hard and paved the road to retirement, you’ve reached your ideal retirement age, and you know your budget. Now is the time to think about your dream retirement community. A few things to keep in mind while you consider your dream retirement community:

  • Location - What city or state do you envision yourself retiring in?
  • Amenities - Are you looking for more of a luxurious experience or a modest, more practical one?
  • Assistance - Do I (or will I) require more attention and care?
